Celebrities rely on personal glam squads to keep them looking fabulous for big events and photo shoots, but what about when they aren't working and awards season is over?
For someone in the public eye, staying gorgeous is a 24/7 job. After all, you never know when (or where) the paparazzi might turn up. So when these celebs are kicking back between gigs in the privacy of their own homes, many get real and apply their own secret DIY beauty treatments.
Here’s what some of your favorite A-listers have reported they mix up in their own kitchens to make their hair shine, bodies super soft and teeth whiter.
Jessica Alba refrigerates a bottle of mint tea and spritzes it on her face to liven up her skin. You got it – peppermint tea not only relaxes your mind and body, but it also hydrates, tones and awakens dull skin.
DIY: Brew a bag of peppermint tea and let it cool. Pour the tea into a spray bottle and refrigerate. If you place it directly into the refrigerator when it’s hot, it will spoil. Your brew can last up to two weeks.
Catherine Zeta Jones keeps her teeth pearly white by eating an apple after every meal so they look polished, but her real trick for that spectacular sparkle is using the pulp of strawberries, which contain malic acid and serves as an astringent to lighten surface stains.
DIY: After you brush, mash up a ripe strawberry until it turns white. You’ll see the substance change form. Spread it onto a clean toothbrush and scrub your teeth in a circular motion to polish. Rinse with warm water.
Juliana Margulies creates her own super sweet body scrub with sugar and body oil.
DIY: Take one packet of raw sugar (as opposed to processed white) and mix it in a bowl containing one tablespoon of oil. Believe it or not, that’s enough to exfoliate your whole body!
Make sure to rub the scrub in circular motions all over your body to slough off any dead skin cells. When you step out of the shower, moisturize within five minutes while your skin is still damp.
Snooki revealed that she exfoliates her face with clean cat litter, which of course I wouldn't recommend! Try this sanitary alternative with products from your kitchen.
DIY: Add a teaspoon of baking soda to your everyday facial cleanser. The baking soda creates a paste and is a very effective, natural exfoliant. Gently rub it in circular motions to slough off dead skin cells.
Claire Danes makes a foot mask with cucumbers to soothe and moisturize her tired feet.
DIY: Take 2 whole cucumbers, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Puree in a blender, then divide the mixture into two plastic baggies and slide each of your feet into a bag. Massage the cucumber mask into your skin. Leave the bags on for about 10 minutes.
The cucumber is extra refreshing and reviving for tired toes, the lemon helps exfoliate, and the olive oil deeply moisturizes for super softness.
